Day One: What a Start!

What a great way to start the day! A huge crowd of family, friends, and supporters were on hand in Davis to see us off at 9 am. It was great having everyone there, cheering us on. Then, we started riding ...
Day One is over, and almost all the riders are here at the Best Western motel in Pollock Pines. Our luggage arrived a little late, so most of us took a shower and then adopted "toga" attire by walking around in our towels. (Sorry, no photos of that on this blog.)
This first day turned out hot, and several of the riders (actually, most of us) had trouble at one time or another. It was tough drinking enough--pretty much nobody has been able to train in heat so far.

Added to that was a bout of typical, day-one-type logistical issues. Cel phones didn't work in many areas, riders got lost, support vehicles went looking for people.
On the whole, however, an enjoyable day. Just short of 90 miles, with about 4,500 feet of climbing.
Tomorrow, we tackle one of the Big Fix's hardest days--171 miles over several 8,000-foot passes on our way to Fallon, NV. Be sure to check back to see how we're doing.
