North American Handmade Bicycle Show

We took the train from Davis to San Francisco to take part in a 50-mile "alleycat" bike race to San Jose for the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. The alleycat ride started with a wild free-for-all, messenger-style, through the gritty streets of San Francisco. The messengers--mostly riding brakeless, fixed-gear machines--rode against traffic, around cars, and through red lights, while us older guys tried (in vain?) to get a bit of "street cred." A little later, with the crazies darting through intersections somewhere else (occasionally crashing), we hooked up with Eric from Palo Alto, who did the wayfinding to all the checkpoints on the poker run. We are indebted to his inerring sense of direction.
