Last March Miles

We hit the road one last time this morning for March Madness miles and took this shot of the sun rising over our top tube as we rode south from Davis. We were able to rack up more than 800 miles in March (all on fixed-gear bicycles). That's a little shy of our goal of 1,000, but not a bad total at all.

Have a Seat!

Having a comfor- table seat is super important on a fixed-gear bicycle. This seat is on a single-speed bicycle of ours, but it could be used on a fixed gear as well--it's sprung like a '66 Cadillac!

"Fixing" Dinner in Winters

What a great night for riding! We headed out with fellow members of the Davis Bike Club for a dinner ride to Winters. Fixed, of course!
Our mileage total for March thus far is 629 miles, all on fixed gears (and all in the same fixed gear: 72 inches)

Just a little training ride--200 kilometers deep in the heart of rural Napa County on our fixed-gear bikes. 5,000 feet of climbing, all in one gear! More photos here

North American Handmade Bicycle Show

We took the train from Davis to San Francisco to take part in a 50-mile "alleycat" bike race to San Jose for the North American Handmade Bicycle Show. The alleycat ride started with a wild free-for-all, messenger-style, through the gritty streets of San Francisco. The messengers--mostly riding brakeless, fixed-gear machines--rode against traffic, around cars, and through red lights, while us older guys tried (in vain?) to get a bit of "street cred." A little later, with the crazies darting through intersections somewhere else (occasionally crashing), we hooked up with Eric from Palo Alto, who did the wayfinding to all the checkpoints on the poker run. We are indebted to his inerring sense of direction.

March 2: Napa Madness

Took the opportunity of a little spare time to ride up Napa's Soda Canyon on our fixed gear Raysport. Yeah, the hills were a little hard.

Let the Madness Begin!

It's March 1, which means the start of the Davis Bike Club's annual "March Madness" mileage challenge. In the photo (left), it's 5:49 a.m., and we're just about to head out for our first 15 miles.

We'll be riding almost all of our goal of 1000 miles on fixed gears this year, hopefully including some multi-day tours. Click here for more info on March Madness.
